A seasonal holiday in Lapland

What can you expect if you take a holiday or short break to Lapland?

The area of Lapland covers the northern most parts of Finland and Sweden, mostly within the Arctic Circle.  Snow lies on the ground from mid-October to early May and temperatures, during the peak holiday season from December to February, barely rise above freezing.  However, the landscape is truly spectacular and there are several holiday companies in the UK which offer package holidays to this area.

For views of the beautiful Northern Lights, then the ideal time to visit is between December and March.  If you travel to Lapland during these months, then you may want to consider spending a night or two in an ice hotel.  For those who love being outdoors, whatever the weather, then have a go at dog-sledding or hiring snowmobiles or, if you have plenty of patience, you could try ice fishing.  There are also plenty of opportunities for skiing, both downhill and cross-country.  If you are taking the family, then December is the time to visit Santa and take the children to a reindeer farm.

For Summer visitors, river cruising and hiking are popular activities and you can also experience the Arctic phenomenon of the Midnight Sun.
