The affluent town of Cannes, in the south of France, is twinned with both Kensington and Chelsea and Beverly Hills and is a busy holiday destination, especially for the tourist with plenty of spending money. With its warm Mediterranean climate, Summer starts early on the French Riviera and May is a particularly good month to pay a visit.
The 2015 Cannes Film Festival runs from May 13th to May 24th and is an ideal time for celebrity spotting along the chic boutiques and classy restaurants of the Promenade de la Croisette. There is plenty to savour and enjoy in Cannes. The old town has quaint narrow streets, local restaurants and a good view over the beaches. The Castre museum can be found in the old tower and St Anne’s Chapel and the Russian Orthodox Church is worth visiting for its interesting architecture.
If you yearn for a little more peace and quiet, then a day trip via a short ferry ride to the nearby islands of Sainte Marguerite and Saint Honorat is highly recommended. Sainte Marguerite is home to a prison fortress and Sainte Honorat has a monastery, but both islands have pretty beaches for water sports and swimming and pine woods for walking and exploring.
