When deciding to stay in a villa vs a hotel, the answer may lie in which type of experience is preferred: being taken care of, or being left alone. Both villa and hotel experiences provide awesome holidays. The two are simply quite different.
The Benefits of a Hotel
A stay in a hotel means zero administrative responsibilities for the guest. Hotel staff takes care of running daily errands much like those in a villa. The biggest plus is having staff quickly resolve issues at the front desk, especially in a country where the guest may even be challenged by the local language.
Shorter vacations make this benefit even more essential. Hotels also usually house amenities that even the most luxury villa will fail to offer. How about a spascape with a pool (complete with lifeguard options) for those nights when the idea of finding nourishment seems just too far of a stretch?
While Hotels win in most scenarios, privacy and space are the biggest losses. Even the most luxury of hotel rooms is likely to be one single room, and the hotel pool, restaurant and lobby are likely to be shared with all guests.
What does a Villa mean for you?
Space is something you can find in a hotel room, but for most, you cannot find privacy in a hotel room. Villa guests do not need to share a pool, do not need to wake up for scheduled dining, nor do they need to eat breakfast in proper attire. Hate to say it, but for some people, a villa ends up costing about the same as a hotel room.
What you trade off is what a hotel provides. For a hotel manager, you are the night manager. If something is broken, good luck, you’re on your own. You’ll most likely need your own vehicle if you want to travel since villas are generally not close to the town center, unlike most hotels.
Couples versus Families
Couples might find a hotel more suitable because meals are much easier to plan and there is no need to prepare food. Also, a hotel bar or restaurant can be social and, as a couple, you can plan to socialize, or, as a couple, you can choose to not socialize. For families, a villa offers more separate spaces. This is especially useful for families with younger kids that go to bed at an earlier time. A villa can offer this space to let the evening continue in the villa while in a hotel, the evening must end once the kids go to sleep since a hotel has one room.
When Group Size Influences the Cost
Hotels also have the advantage for couples because a villa that can house eight people will cost about the same if there are two or eight people staying there. This means that to be cost effective, the villa must house enough people to split the costs. For a group of six or more, villas are frequently more cost effective and offer more space.

Some resorts have a mix of hotel and villa services. There is space to yourself because you get a villa, but there is still a restaurant and staff nearby to assist you. These are more expensive than renting a straight villa, but this gives the opportunity to have privacy while still having some services.
